Hoy es el Día Nacional de España, también llamado Día de la Hispanidad.
Se conmemora el 12 de octubre porque ese fue el día que Cristóbal Colón pisó tierras americanas por primera vez en 1492. Muchos territorios del continente americano pertenecieron durante varios años a España. Esa es la razón por la que en muchos países de América se habla también español.

Today is Spain National Day, also called Hispanic Day.
We commemorate it on 12th October as it was then when Christopher Columbus reached American lands for the very first time in 1492. A lot of territories on the American continent became part of the Spanish kingdom. This is why Spanish is spoken in many countries in America.
